Balarāma’s Pilgrimage Context
आहरन्ति महाप्राज्ञास्तेषां लोकेष्वपश्यत । जो महाप्राज्ञ पुरुष बहुत-सी सुवर्णमयी दक्षिणाओंसे युक्त क्रतुश्रेष्ठ वाजपेय यज्ञका अनुष्ठान करते हैं, उनके लोकोंमें भी उन्होंने जैगीषव्यका दर्शन किया ।। ३४ $ ।। यजन्ते राजसूयेन पुण्डरीकेण चैव ये
vaiśampāyana uvāca | āharanti mahāprājñās teṣāṃ lokeṣv apaśyata | ye mahāprājñāḥ puruṣā bahvīḥ suvarṇamayīr dakṣiṇābhiḥ yuktān kratūn śreṣṭhān vājapeyān anuṣṭhahanti, teṣāṃ lokeṣv api sa jaigīṣavyaḥ dṛṣṭaḥ | yajante rājasūyena puṇḍarīkeṇa caiva ye ||
Vaiśampāyana said: He beheld Jaigīṣavya even in the worlds attained by those supremely wise men who perform the excellent Vājapeya sacrifice, accompanied by abundant golden gifts. And likewise, among those who worship by the Rājasūya and the Puṇḍarīka rites, he saw him there as well. The passage underscores that ritual grandeur and lavish charity do not by themselves guarantee unique spiritual distinction; Jaigīṣavya’s presence across such exalted realms points to a higher, steadier attainment beyond mere sacrificial merit.
