Aśvatthāman’s Curse, Parikṣit’s Future, and the Mani’s Restitution

Vaiśampāyana said: “This is an earlier incident. When the daughter of King Virāṭa—who had become the daughter-in-law of Arjuna, the bearer of Gāṇḍīva—was living in the city of Upaplavya, a vow-observing brāhmaṇa saw her and foretold: ‘When the Kuru line has been exhausted, you will have a son. Because he will be born at a time when the Kurus are diminished, the child in your womb will be named Parīkṣit.’”

Educational Q&A

Even when a lineage seems destroyed by adharma and war, dharma reasserts continuity through rightful heirs; disciplined spiritual insight (a vratavān brāhmaṇa) frames suffering within a larger moral and cosmic order.

Vaiśampāyana recalls a prior moment in Upaplavya when a vow-observing brāhmaṇa foretells to Virāṭa’s daughter (Arjuna’s daughter-in-law) that after the Kuru line is greatly diminished, she will bear a son who will be named Parīkṣit because he is born when the Kurus are ‘parikṣīṇa’ (exhausted).
