Nārada’s Examination of Royal Ethics

Nārada said: “O great king, do you recognize when someone has done you a good turn? Do you praise the doer, and—while honoring him—show your gratitude by giving him due respect and reverence in the midst of an assembly filled with worthy men?”
A ruler should be mindful of benefits received, acknowledge them, and publicly honor the benefactor among the virtuous; gratitude and recognition of merit are presented as marks of righteous kingship.
Nārada is examining the king’s conduct through a series of ‘kaccit’ questions, here focusing on whether the king recognizes good deeds done for him and responds with praise and respectful public honor in a noble assembly.
