Bhishma said: Seeing that child’s abnormal and frightening form, his parents—along with his other brothers and relatives—trembled in fear. Confronted with his dreadful appearance, they resolved to abandon him. The passage highlights how fear and social stigma can drive even one’s own family toward a harsh, ethically fraught decision.

The verse foregrounds an ethical tension: fear and aversion to perceived deformity can eclipse familial responsibility (dharma). It invites reflection on compassion, protection of the vulnerable, and the moral cost of rejection driven by stigma.
Bhishma narrates that the child’s frightening, abnormal appearance causes his parents and extended family to panic; the parents then decide to abandon the child.
