Vaiśampāyana said: “O Janamejaya, I shall now recount Nakula’s deeds and his conquests—how that mighty prince subdued the western quarter, the region held under the authority of Vāsudeva. Listen to the manner of his victory.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse frames conquest as accountable narration of a ruler’s actions: power (prabhuḥ) is presented alongside a recognized cosmic-political order (the quarters associated with deities such as Vāsudeva), implying that royal expansion is to be understood within dharmic and ritualized structures rather than mere aggression.
Vaiśampāyana transitions to the account of Nakula’s campaign, announcing that he will describe Nakula’s deeds and specifically how he achieved victory over the western quarter, described as a region under Vāsudeva’s dominion.
