Sañjaya said: “Thus, in the Śrī Mahābhārata, within the Droṇa Parva, in the section concerning the slaying of Jayadratha, the ninety-sixth chapter—dealing with the theme of duel-combat—comes to its close.” This colophon marks a formal pause in the war narrative, framing violence within ordered divisions and inviting reflection on duty, consequence, and the moral weight of battle.

As a colophon, the verse does not teach through direct instruction; instead it frames the war episode within a disciplined textual order. By naming the parva and the theme (duel-combat) alongside Jayadratha’s death-context, it implicitly invites ethical reflection: even in chaos, actions are recorded, judged, and situated within dharma and consequence.
This is the formal closing line of the chapter: Sañjaya signals that the ninety-sixth chapter (on duel-fighting) within the Jayadratha-slaying section of the Droṇa Parva has ended.
