Vyāsa said: The entire universe in all its aspects—past, present, and future—has arisen and expanded from Bhava (Śiva) alone. Therefore he is praised by the epithet “Bhūta-bhavya-bhavodbhava,” the source from whom the past, the present, and the future come forth.

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches a Śaiva theological vision: Śiva (Bhava/Śaṅkara) is the ultimate source of time and existence—past, present, and future—and thus worthy of reverent praise through meaningful epithets.

Vyāsa is describing and glorifying Śiva by explaining the significance of a divine title: because the whole cosmos across all times proceeds from Bhava, he is called “Bhūta-bhavya-bhavodbhava.”
