Sañjaya said: Drona, however, bore down upon the Pāñcālas—led in the van by Dhṛṣṭadyumna. On that fifth day of battle, O Bhārata, the heroes, driven by fierce momentum, crushed and trampled one another in the press of war.

The verse underscores the ethical gravity of war: once martial duty escalates into full-force assault, even 'heroes' become instruments of mutual destruction. It invites reflection on how dharma in battle can devolve into sheer violence when driven by momentum and rivalry.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that Droṇa launches a powerful attack specifically against the Pāñcāla forces, whose front is led by Dhṛṣṭadyumna. On that fifth day of fighting, both sides clash so fiercely that warriors trample and crush one another in close combat.
