He was born from two mothers, his body divided into two separate halves. Since an old woman named Jarā joined those halves together, he came to be known as Jarāsandha.
श्रीवायुदेव उवाच
The verse explains how a person’s name and identity can arise from a defining event: Jarāsandha is so called because Jarā physically united his two separated halves, making the name an ethical-narrative marker of origin and destiny.
Vāyu recounts Jarāsandha’s extraordinary birth: he was born in two halves from two mothers, and an old woman named Jarā joined the halves, after which he became known as Jarāsandha.
