Sañjaya said: Seeking to regain his rightful kingdom, Arjuna—ambidextrous in battle—remembered the hardships inflicted by the Kurus and the sufferings of the twelve-year forest exile. Stirred by that memory, the great-souled, immeasurable hero covered all directions with arrows released from the Gāṇḍīva.

Educational Q&A

The verse frames Arjuna’s violence within a dharmic and ethical narrative: the warrior’s resolve is fueled by remembered injustice and prolonged suffering, and his aim is the restoration of rightful order (rājya). It highlights how memory of wrongs can harden determination, and how power, when directed toward a perceived just cause, becomes decisive and all-encompassing.

Sañjaya describes Arjuna in the thick of battle. Wanting to reclaim the kingdom and recalling the Kauravas’ oppression and the twelve-year forest exile, Arjuna releases a storm of arrows from the Gāṇḍīva, so dense that it seems to cover every direction.
