Mid-day Battle Description: Bhīṣma Engaged by the Pāñcālas

sañjaya uvāca | mahārāja! tadā mayā kuntīputrasya bhīmasya adbhutaḥ parākramaḥ dṛṣṭaḥ | yady api droṇācāryaḥ śaravarṣeṇa taṃ nivārayām āsa, tathāpi sa tava putrān jaghāna || yathā go-vṛṣabho varṣaṃ khāt patat saṃdhārayati, bhīmas tathā droṇa-muktaṃ śaravarṣam adhārayat ||

Sañjaya said: O King, at that time I witnessed the wondrous valor of Bhima, the son of Kunti. Though Drona, by pouring forth a rain of arrows, tried to check him, Bhima still struck down your sons. As a mighty bull calmly bears the rain that falls from the sky, so Bhimasena endured the arrow-storm released by Drona.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights steadfast endurance under overwhelming assault: true valor is not only striking power but also the capacity to remain unshaken—like a bull bearing heavy rain—while pursuing one’s martial duty in battle.

Sanjaya reports to Dhritarashtra that Bhima displayed extraordinary prowess on the battlefield: despite Drona’s intense barrage of arrows meant to stop him, Bhima endured it and continued to kill Dhritarashtra’s sons.
