Sanjaya said: Thus, in the sacred Mahabharata, within the Bhishma Parva, in the section concerning the fall of Bhishma, the eightieth chapter—whose subject is the dialogue between Bhishma and Duryodhana—comes to its close. This colophon marks a formal pause in the war-chronicle, showing that counsel and moral reasoning still move amid the violence of battle.

This verse functions as a colophon rather than a doctrinal statement: it underscores that even in wartime narrative, ethical counsel (saṁvāda) remains central, and it formally situates the reader within the epic’s layered structure (parva and sub-parva).
Sanjaya signals the completion of the chapter focused on the Bhishma–Duryodhana dialogue, marking a transition point in the Bhishma Parva and indicating that the account belongs to the Bhishma-vadha (Bhishma’s fall) section.
