Bhīmasena–Duryodhana Engagement at Sunset
उसमें सोनेका डंडा लगा हुआ था। उसको सह लेना बहुत ही कठिन था। उसे सहसा आते देख भीष्मने झुकी हुई गाँठवाले बाणोंद्वारा युद्धभूमिमें काट गिराया ।।
tato ’pareṇa bhallena pītena niśitena ca | kārmukaṁ bhīmasenasya dvidhā ciccheda bhārata ||
Sañjaya said: That weapon bore a golden shaft and was hard indeed to withstand. Seeing it rush in all at once, Bhīṣma cut it down on the battlefield with arrows whose joints were bent. Then, O Bhārata, with another sharp, well-tempered bhalla arrow, Bhīṣma cut Bhīmasena’s bow in two.
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights kṣatriya-dharma in practice: disciplined, skillful combat where disabling an opponent’s weapon can be a strategic and ethically bounded act within the rules of war, reflecting restraint amid violence.
Sañjaya narrates that Bhīṣma, using a sharp, well-tempered bhalla arrow, severs Bhīmasena’s bow into two, neutralizing his immediate ability to fight with that weapon.
