Bhīmasena–Duryodhana Engagement at Sunset

Sañjaya said: That weapon bore a golden shaft and was hard indeed to withstand. Seeing it rush in all at once, Bhīṣma cut it down on the battlefield with arrows whose joints were bent. Then, O Bhārata, with another sharp, well-tempered bhalla arrow, Bhīṣma cut Bhīmasena’s bow in two.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights kṣatriya-dharma in practice: disciplined, skillful combat where disabling an opponent’s weapon can be a strategic and ethically bounded act within the rules of war, reflecting restraint amid violence.

Sañjaya narrates that Bhīṣma, using a sharp, well-tempered bhalla arrow, severs Bhīmasena’s bow into two, neutralizing his immediate ability to fight with that weapon.
