Sanjaya said: Then, there on the battlefield, as it was being struck down by Arjuna’s arrows, the Kaurava host—shaken by grief and fear—broke ranks and fled in confusion.
संजय उवाच
When an army (or any collective) is driven by wrongful intent and loses moral and strategic steadiness, it becomes vulnerable to inner collapse—grief and fear overpower discipline. The verse highlights the ethical psychology of war: courage and clarity sustain action, while despair and fear dissolve it.
Sanjaya reports that Arjuna’s arrow-barrage is inflicting heavy damage in the fight, and the Kaurava troops, trembling with despondency and fear, scatter and flee from the battlefield.
