Sañjaya said: “Behold, O best of mountains: the radiant Sun is now reaching his setting. It is as though he were drawing in, on every side, the very eyes of the whole world.”
संजय उवाच
The verse uses sunset as a moral and reflective cue: as the Sun ‘withdraws the eyes of the world,’ clarity and direct perception diminish. In a war setting, it reminds listeners that human action unfolds under cosmic rhythms, and that judgment and restraint become crucial when certainty (daylight/vision) fades.
Sañjaya signals that evening has arrived: the Sun is setting behind the western mountain. This functions as a scene-marker in the battle account, indicating the end of the day’s fighting and a shift toward night, regrouping, and the consequences of the day’s events.
