Sañjaya said: By virtue of their charioteer’s skill and swift maneuvering, the two displayed many kinds of tactical movements—circling patterns, advances, and withdrawals—each watching for an opening in the other’s strikes and counterstrikes. The scene underscores how, in war, mastery of technique and alert judgment can decide life and death, even before sheer strength is tested.

The verse highlights that victory in righteous combat is not only about force but also about disciplined skill, agility, and discerning the right moment—seeking the opponent’s ‘antara’ (opening) without reckless aggression.
Sañjaya describes two combatants (with their charioteers) executing varied chariot maneuvers—circling, advancing, retreating—while mutually assessing openings amid exchanges of blows.
