भीष्मधनंजयद्वैरथम्

Bhīṣma–Dhanaṃjaya Duel and the Opening Clash

sañjaya uvāca | droṇavaikartanābhyāṃ vā rathī saṃyātum arhati | mahārāja! kurukulake pitāmaha bhīṣma, droṇācārya tathā karṇake sivā dūsarā kauna aisā rathī hai, yo gāṇḍīvadhārī arjunakā sāmnā kar sake |

Sanjaya said: “Only Drona and Vaikartana (Karna) are truly fit to meet in single combat as chariot-warriors. O great king, in the Kuru line—apart from grandsire Bhishma, Acharya Drona, and Karna—who else is such a warrior that could stand against Arjuna, the bearer of the Gandiva?”

Educational Q&A

The verse stresses discernment and responsibility in warfare: only those truly qualified should undertake the grave duty of confronting a supreme warrior like Arjuna. It cautions against reckless pride and highlights a dharmic sense of hierarchy—great challenges demand the most capable and accountable champions.

Sanjaya reports to King Dhritarashtra, evaluating the Kuru side’s capacity to oppose Arjuna. He asserts that, besides the foremost Kuru champions—Bhishma, Drona, and Karna—no other chariot-warrior is realistically able to face Arjuna, emphasizing Arjuna’s battlefield dominance.
