Chapter 55: Bhīṣma’s onslaught, Arjuna’s counter, and Kṛṣṇa’s raised discus
विदर्भमेकलैश्नैव कर्णप्रावरणैरपि । सहिता: सर्वसैन्येन भीष्ममाहवशोभिनम्
vidarbham ekalaiśnaiva karṇaprāvaraṇair api | sahitāḥ sarvasainyena bhīṣmam āhavaśobhinam ||
Sañjaya said: They advanced toward Vidarbha, fully equipped—even with ear-guards and protective coverings—and accompanied by the entire army, with Bhīṣma, resplendent in the glory of battle, at their head.
(संजय उवाच
The verse highlights the ethic of martial readiness and collective discipline in war: an army moves as a unified body, properly equipped, centered around a commander whose role is to embody courage and order amid violence.
Sañjaya describes a wartime movement: forces proceed toward Vidarbha, fully outfitted with protective gear, accompanied by the whole army, with Bhīṣma portrayed as radiant and formidable in the battle setting.
