tribhir guṇamayair bhāvair ebhiḥ sarvam idaṁ jagat | mohitaṁ nābhijānāti mām ebhyaḥ param avyayam ||
The entire world is deluded by these three states born of the guṇas—sattva, rajas, and tamas. Therefore, people fail to recognize Me, the Supreme, imperishable Reality that transcends these guṇas.
Human perception is conditioned by the three guṇas; as long as consciousness is shaped by sattva, rajas, and tamas, one cannot recognize the Supreme Reality that is beyond them. Spiritual progress requires discerning the guṇas’ influence and turning toward the imperishable Self/Lord.
In the Gītā’s teaching sequence, the Lord explains why, despite being all-pervading and the very essence of the world, He is not recognized by ordinary beings: their minds are deluded by guṇa-born dispositions, which veil direct knowledge of the transcendent.
