Karma-Yoga, Jñāna-Yajña, and Avatāra Instruction
देही नित्यमवध्यो<यं देहे सर्वस्य भारत । तस्मात् सर्वाणि भूतानि न त्वं शोचितुमहसि,हे अर्जुन! यह आत्मा सबके शरीरमें सदा ही अवध्य है। इस कारण सम्पूर्ण प्राणियोंके लिये तू शोक करनेके योग्य नहीं है
dehī nityam avadhyo ’yaṁ dehe sarvasya bhārata | tasmāt sarvāṇi bhūtāni na tvaṁ śocitum arhasi ||
Sanjaya reports the teaching that the embodied Self within every body is eternally beyond destruction. Therefore, Arjuna is told that grief for all living beings is not ethically warranted, because the true inner person is not slain even amid the violence of war; sorrow arises from mistaking the perishable body for the imperishable Self.
संजय उवाच
The indwelling Self (dehī/ātman) in every body is eternal and cannot be slain; therefore grief based on the death of bodies is philosophically mistaken and ethically discouraged, especially when one must act according to dharma.
During the Kurukṣetra crisis, Sanjaya recounts the instruction given to Arjuna: to overcome paralyzing sorrow by recognizing the imperishability of the Self, so that he can act with clarity in the impending battle.
