Adhyāya 42 — Mahābhūta–Indriya–Adhyātma-Vyavasthā
Brahmā’s Instruction on Elements and Faculties
त्वग्घ्राणश्रोत्रचक्षूंषि रसना वाक् च संयता: । विशुद्धं च मनो यस्य बुद्धिश्चाव्यभिचारिणी
tvag-ghrāṇa-śrotra-cakṣūṃṣi rasanā vāk ca saṃyatāḥ | viśuddhaṃ ca mano yasya buddhis cāvyabhicāriṇī ||
Vāyu said: “He whose faculties—touch (skin), smell (nose), hearing (ears), and sight (eyes)—together with the tongue and speech are restrained; whose mind is purified; and whose understanding does not waver from its chosen resolve—such a person attains that auspicious Brahman, beyond which there is nothing higher.”
वायुदेव उवाच
The verse teaches that liberation-oriented realization depends on disciplined restraint of the senses and speech, purification of the mind, and an unwavering intellect; such inner steadiness leads to attainment of the highest Brahman.
Vāyudeva is instructing the listener on the marks of a spiritually accomplished person, describing the inner disciplines—sense-restraint, mental purity, and steady discernment—that culminate in reaching the supreme Brahman.
