Brahma-vidyā: Satya–Tapas and the Enumeration of Tattvas
Arjuna–Vāsudeva framed dialogue
वायुदेव उवाच तस्मै सम्प्रतिपन्नाय यथावत् परिपृच्छते । शिष्याय गुणयुक्ताय शान्ताय प्रियवर्तिने
vāyudeva uvāca: tasmai sampratipannāya yathāvat paripṛcchate | śiṣyāya guṇayuktāya śāntāya priyavartine ||
Vāyudeva said: To that disciple—who had fully taken refuge in his teacher and who questioned in the proper manner—the preceptor responded fittingly. The disciple was endowed with virtues, calm in temperament, and acted to please his guru, staying close like a shadow. Thus, when he asked, the wise and vow-observing teacher gave precise answers to all the questions stated earlier.
वायुदेव उवाच
Right learning depends on right approach: a disciple should surrender ego, inquire properly, remain calm and virtuous, and act for the teacher’s good; then the teacher’s instruction becomes precise and fruitful.
Vāyudeva describes an exemplary student who has approached his guru correctly and asks questions in the proper way; in response, the wise, vow-keeping teacher answers the previously raised questions accurately.
