Ambarīṣa’s Gāthā: The Guṇas and the Restraint of Greed
यत्प्रयुक्तो जन्तुरयं वैतृष्ण्यं नाधिगच्छति । तृष्णार्त इह निम्नानि धावमानो न बुध्यते
yatprayukto jantur ayaṁ vaitṛṣṇyaṁ nādhigacchati | tṛṣṇārta iha nimnāni dhāvamāno na budhyate ||
Driven by that very impulse, this living being does not attain freedom from craving (vaitṛṣṇya). Afflicted by thirst for objects, he rushes in this world toward low and degrading actions, unawares, failing to wake up to what is truly beneficial.

Craving (tṛṣṇā) is portrayed as a driving force that blocks dispassion (vaitṛṣṇya). When a person is ruled by desire, he tends to run toward morally ‘low’ choices and loses reflective awareness; ethical clarity requires stepping out of that compulsion.
A Brahmin speaker comments on the inner condition of an embodied being: under the push of a certain motivating force (implied to be desire/impulse), the person cannot reach detachment and, tormented by craving, rushes into base actions without realizing the consequences.
