Yudhiṣṭhira’s Grief, Kṛṣṇa’s Consolation, and Vyāsa’s Admonition (युधिष्ठिरशोक-निवारणोपदेशः)
नेमामह्सि मूढानां वृत्तिं त्वमनुवर्तितुम् । पितृपैतामहं वृत्तमास्थाय धुरमुद्गह
naimāṃsi mūḍhānāṃ vṛttiṃ tvam anuvartitum | pitṛ-paitāmahaṃ vṛttam āsthāya dhuram udgaha ||
You should not follow the misguided conduct of foolish men. Instead, taking refuge in the time-honored way of your father and forefathers, take up the burden of kingship and carry out the duties of rule.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Do not imitate the behavior of the deluded; uphold dharma by following the proven ancestral standard of conduct and accepting the responsibilities of governance.
In Vaiśaṃpāyana’s narration, counsel is being given to a ruler/leader to reject misguided popular behavior and instead assume the royal burden by adhering to the righteous tradition of his lineage.
