व्याधि-गुण-साम्योपदेशः | Discourse on Affliction, Guṇa-Equilibrium, and the Inner Battle

शत्रुदमन! द्रोणाचार्य और भीष्मके साथ जो युद्ध हुआ था, वही युद्ध आपके सामने उपस्थित है। इस समय आपको अकेले अपने मनके साथ युद्ध करना होगा ।।

śatrudamana! droṇācārya-bhīṣmābhyāṁ saha yo yuddhaḥ abhavat sa eva yuddhaḥ tava purataḥ samupasthitaḥ। idānīṁ tvayā ekenaiva svena manasā saha yoddhavyam॥ tasmād abhyupagantavyaṁ yuddhāya bharatarṣabha। paramavyaktarūpasya pāraṁ yuktyā svakarmabhiḥ॥ bharatabhūṣaṇa! ataḥ tasmai yuddhāya tvayā sajjībhavitavyam। svakarma-pālanena yogena ca manaḥ vaśīkṛtya māyātītaṁ parabrahma prāpnuhi॥

Vāyu said: “O tamer of foes! The very battle you once fought alongside Droṇa and Bhīṣma now stands before you again. But at this moment you must fight alone—against your own mind. Therefore, O bull among the Bharatas, step forward for this battle. By right discernment and by faithfully performing your own duties, cross beyond the realm of the Supreme Unmanifest. O ornament of the Bharata line, prepare yourself for that war: master the mind through yoga while upholding your obligations, and attain the Supreme Brahman that lies beyond māyā.”

Educational Q&A

The verse reframes heroism as an inward discipline: the decisive battle is against one’s own mind. By performing one’s proper duties (svakarma) with discernment (yukti) and mastering the mind through yoga, one transcends māyā and realizes the Supreme Brahman.

Vāyudeva addresses a Bharata hero, recalling the earlier great war fought with Droṇa and Bhīṣma, and declares that a comparable ‘battle’ now confronts him—an internal struggle requiring solitary effort. He urges readiness, duty-based action, and yogic control of the mind to reach the transcendent goal.
