Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Śrāddha Request and Bhīma’s Objection (Āśramavāsika-parva, Adhyāya 17)

ततो रात्र्यां व्यतीतायां कृतपूर्वाह्निकक्रिया:

Vaiśampāyana said: When the night had passed, having completed the prescribed morning rites, they proceeded onward in due order—after duly offering oblations into the sacred fire. They had fasted through the night, and with their faces turned toward the north, they continued their journey, keeping their gaze fixed in that direction.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights disciplined dharma in a renunciant setting: even while moving toward withdrawal from worldly life, one maintains purity through prescribed rites, self-restraint (fasting), and purposeful orientation (northward), suggesting inner resolve guided by tradition.

After the night ends, the group completes morning rituals and offers oblations into the fire. Having fasted overnight, they then proceed onward in an orderly manner, facing and looking toward the northern direction as they travel.
