Pitṛ-śrāddha-haviḥ-phala-nirdeśa
Offerings for Ancestors and Their Stated Results
पुरुषा वपुषा युक्ता: स्वैः स्वै: प्रसवजैर्गुणै: । अतः सम्पूर्ण भूतोंमें जो सत्त्वमुण तथा उत्तम तेज है, वह प्रजापतिके उस शुक्रसे ही प्रकट हुआ है। प्रभो! ब्रह्माजीके वीर्यकी जब अग्निमें आहुति दी गयी तब उससे तीन शरीरधारी पुरुष उत्पन्न हुए, जो अपने-अपने कारणजनित गुणोंसे सम्पन्न थे || १०४ $ ।।
puruṣā vapuṣā yuktāḥ svaiḥ svaiḥ prasavajair guṇaiḥ |
Vasiṣṭha said: “Those persons were embodied beings, each endowed with the qualities that arose from his own particular cause of birth. Thus, whatever complete excellence of sattva and the highest radiance is found among beings is said to have manifested from that generative essence of Prajāpati. When Brahmā’s seed was offered into the fire, three embodied persons arose from it, each furnished with the attributes born of his own origin.”
वसिष्ठ उवाच
The passage frames excellence—especially sattva (purity) and tejas (radiant power)—as rooted in a sacred, orderly process of creation: beings manifest with distinct, causally grounded qualities, and spiritual potency is traced back to Prajāpati/Brahmā rather than to random chance.
Vasiṣṭha describes a cosmogonic episode: Brahmā’s generative essence is offered into fire, from which three embodied persons arise, each marked by qualities specific to his origin; the surrounding narration identifies them as Bhṛgu, Aṅgiras, and Kavi, linked etymologically to flames/embers.
