Chapter 85: Suvarṇasya Janma ca Pradāna-Phalam
The Origin of Gold and the Merit of Gifting
इस प्रकार श्रीमह्याभारत अनुशासनपर्वके अन्तर्गत दानधर्मपर्वमें गोदानविषयक इक्यासीवाँ अध्याय पूरा हुआ
iti prakāraḥ śrīmahābhārate anuśāsana-parvaṇi antargate dāna-dharma-parvaṇi go-dāna-viṣayaka ekāśītitamo 'dhyāyaḥ samāptaḥ
Thus ends the eighty-first chapter on the subject of gifting cows, within the section on the dharma of charity, contained in the Anuśāsana Parva of the sacred Mahābhārata. The closing formula underscores the ethical framing of the discourse: charity (especially go-dāna) is presented as a structured component of dharma-teaching.
व्यास उवाच
This line functions as a colophon marking the end of a chapter devoted to go-dāna within dāna-dharma. Its ethical emphasis is that charity is a formal, teachable component of dharma, and the tradition highlights specific gifts (like cows) as exemplary forms of righteous giving.
The speaker’s discourse reaches a formal conclusion: the text announces that the eighty-first chapter on cow-gifting, situated within the charity-dharma section of the Anuśāsana Parva, has been completed.
