Bhishma said: “In this world, the gift of water is declared to be auspicious, fame-bestowing, and life-prolonging. O son of Kunti, the giver of water ever stands above (and beyond the reach of) his enemies—protected by the merit of that simple, sustaining charity.”

Bhishma teaches that giving water (jaladāna) is a highly meritorious, accessible form of charity that brings auspiciousness, fame, and longevity, and that its spiritual merit places the giver in a position of strength even against enemies.
In the Anuśāsana Parva’s dharma-instruction section, Bhishma continues advising the Kuru prince (addressed as Kaunteya) on righteous conduct, highlighting water-giving as a daily practice of compassion and social responsibility.
