Shloka 34

Nṛga-upākhyāna: Brāhmaṇa-sva and the Consequence of Misappropriated Gift-Cattle (कृकलास-रूपे नृगोपाख्यानम्)

तदभूमिं वापि पितृभि: श्राद्धकर्म विहन्यते । जो परायी भूमिमें पितरोंके लिये श्राद्ध करता है, अथवा जो उस भूमिको पितरोंके लिये दानमें देता है, उसके वे श्राद्धकर्म और दान दोनों ही नष्ट होते (निष्फल हो जाते) हैं ।।

Translation

If one performs śrāddha for the Pitṛs upon another man’s land, that śrāddha is marred and becomes fruitless. And if one gives that very land as a gift for the Pitṛs, both the śrāddha and the donation are destroyed, yielding no result. Therefore the wise should first purchase the ground and then bestow it—even if only a little.
