Pānīya-dāna and Anna-dāna: The Primacy of Life-Sustaining Gifts (पानीयदान-प्रशंसा / अन्नदान-प्रशंसा)

अन्नतः सर्वमेतद्धि यत्‌ किंचित्‌ स्थाणु जंगमम्‌ | त्रिषु लोकेषु धर्मार्थमन्नं देयमतो बुधै:

Indeed, all that exists—both the immobile and the moving—throughout the three worlds rests upon food. Therefore the wise should surely give food in charity for the sake of dharma in all the three worlds.
