Cyavana–Kuśika Dialogue on Lineage, Conflict, and Transmission

Yudhiṣṭhira uvāca: tasminn antarhite vipre rājā kim akarot tadā | bhāryā cāsya mahābhāgā tan me brūhi pitāmaha ||
Yudhiṣṭhira said: “When that brāhmaṇa sage disappeared from sight, what did the king do then? And what did his noble, fortunate queen do? Grandfather, tell me this.”
युधिछिर उवाच
The verse models dhārmic inquiry: Yudhiṣṭhira seeks a precise account of how rulers should act after a sage’s test or intervention, emphasizing that ethical learning begins with careful questioning about conduct (ācāra) and responsibility.
Yudhiṣṭhira asks Bhīṣma to continue the story: after the brāhmaṇa sage vanished, he wants to know what actions were taken by the king and by the king’s virtuous queen.
