Bhishma said: Even when a family line is obscured—so that it is not outwardly known who belongs to which lineage or from whose seed one is born—still, a person born from a mixed or confused union inevitably takes on the disposition of his father, whether in a small measure or in great. Hidden origins do not erase inherited tendencies; therefore one should be vigilant about conduct, marriage norms, and the safeguarding of lineage and character.

That concealed lineage does not prevent inherited dispositions from manifesting; therefore dharmic society emphasizes responsible unions and cultivation of character, since tendencies linked to parentage can appear even when origins are not publicly known.
In Bhishma’s instruction on dharma (Anushasana Parva), he explains to the listener that mixed or uncertain birth (yoni-saṅkara) still shows traces of paternal nature, using this to underscore the importance of safeguarding lineage and ethical conduct.
