Yudhiṣṭhira said: “O Grandsire, whether from the lure of wealth, from greed, or from desire, or again from uncertainty about social class—or even from ignorance regarding it—there arises mixed progeny (varṇasaṅkara). When, overcome by such motives, a woman of a higher class forms a union with a man of a lower class, mixed offspring is born. Tell me: what is the dharma of those people who are born from such intermixture of classes, and what duties and occupations are prescribed for them?”
युधिषछ्िर उवाच
The verse frames varṇasaṅkara as arising from ethically charged motives (greed, desire) as well as from epistemic/social confusion (ignorance or uncertainty about varṇa). It sets up a dharma-inquiry: how society should assign duties and moral expectations to those born from irregular unions, emphasizing responsibility, social regulation, and the need for clear ethical guidance.
In the Anuśāsana Parva’s instruction setting, Yudhiṣṭhira questions the Grandsire (Bhīṣma) about the origin of mixed progeny and asks for a detailed account of their dharma and prescribed occupations—preparing the ground for Bhīṣma’s normative explanation in the subsequent verses.
