न जातु त्वमिति ब्रूयादापन्नो5पि महत्तरम् | त्वंकारो वा वधो वेति विद्वत्सु न विशिष्यते
na jātu tvam iti brūyād āpanno 'pi mahattaram | tvaṃkāro vā vadho veti vidvatsu na viśiṣyate, yudhiṣṭhira |
Bhīṣma said: “Yudhiṣṭhira, even when you are pressed by the greatest calamity, never address a superior person with the familiar ‘you’ (tvam). Among the wise, there is no real difference between such disrespectful ‘tvaṃ’-address and outright injury—so grave is the fault of dishonouring the worthy.”
