अतिथीनां च सर्वेषां प्रेष्याणां स्वजनस्य च । तथा शरणकामानां गोप्ता स्यात् स्वागतप्रद:
atithīnāṃ ca sarveṣāṃ preṣyāṇāṃ svajanasya ca | tathā śaraṇakāmānāṃ goptā syāt svāgatapradaḥ ||
Bhīṣma said: “A true and upright person should become the protector and gracious welcomer of all guests, of those who serve in one’s household, of one’s own kin, and likewise of those who seek refuge. The ethical ideal taught here is hospitality joined with responsibility: to receive others with honor and to ensure their safety when they depend upon you.”
