Arjuna said: “Release Utathya’s wife. Why have you carried her off? You were appointed as guardians of the worlds, not as destroyers of social order. Soma gave his daughter to me; she is my lawful wife. How, then, have you abducted her today?” In accordance with Utathya’s words, Nārada conveyed this demand to Varuṇa, lord of the waters, urging him to let the woman go and questioning the justice of the abduction.

Educational Q&A

Those entrusted with guardianship (lokapālas) must uphold dharma and social order; power does not justify violating marital rights or abducting another’s wife. Even divine authorities are accountable to ethical norms.

Arjuna demands that Varuṇa release Utathya’s wife and challenges the legitimacy of her abduction, invoking the duty of world-guardians and the prior marital gift by Soma. Nārada, following Utathya’s instruction, delivers this rebuke and request to Varuṇa.
