Bhīṣma said: “Why has astonishment arisen in this assembly of seers—who are ever free from attachment, without possessiveness, and learned in the sacred teachings? What cause can there be for wonder among those who have renounced clinging and know the śāstras?”

Bhīṣma highlights that true sages—detached, non-possessive, and grounded in śāstric knowledge—should not be easily shaken into surprise; spiritual maturity implies steadiness and clarity rather than reactive wonder.
Bhīṣma addresses an assembly of ṛṣis who appear astonished at something being discussed, and he questions the basis of their amazement, emphasizing their expected detachment and scriptural understanding.
