“O son of Brahmā, recount that very Thousand Names of Śiva which, in ancient times, the sage Taṇḍī expounded in Brahmā’s world before Brahmā himself; and let these great seers—Vyāsa and the rest—rich in austerity, steadfast in excellent vows and masters of their senses, hear it from your lips. Proclaim the Lord’s mighty auspicious epithets: the Steadfast, the Joyous, the Sacrificial Priest, the Protector, the Creator of the universe, the Divine Fire, the Shaven-headed, and the Lord of matted locks.”
भीष्म उवाच
The verse frames recitation of Shiva’s names as a dharmic practice: remembering the divine through precise, reverent speech is itself a vow that cultivates purity, steadiness, and alignment with cosmic order—seeing Shiva as protector, creator, and the inner fire of transformation.
Within Bhishma’s instruction, the Shiva-sahasranāma is being formally invoked. This verse strings together epithets of Shiva and urges their proclamation, continuing the litany that is to be heard by disciplined sages as part of a meritorious observance.
