Sāma (Sāntva) and Dāna: The Brāhmaṇa’s Conciliatory Release from a Rākṣasa
Maitreya uvāca: asaṁśayaṁ mahāprājña yathaivāttha tathaiva tat | anujñātaś ca bhavatā kiñcid brūyām ahaṁ vibho ||
Bhīṣma said: O King, when Vyāsa had spoken thus, Maitreya—the worshipper of righteous action, a learned man born in a most prosperous family—answered in this manner. Maitreya said: “O greatly wise one, without doubt it is exactly as you have stated. O Lord, if you grant me permission, I would like to say something.”
मैत्रेय उवाच
The verse models ethical speech: even when one agrees with a superior’s statement, one should speak with humility and seek permission before offering further counsel, showing respect for authority and proper conversational dharma.
After Vyasa has spoken, Maitreya responds by affirming Vyasa’s words as true and then asks leave to add his own remarks, indicating a formal, respectful exchange within a didactic setting.
