Adhyāya 122 — Śruta-vṛtta-yukta Brāhmaṇa and the Ethics of Dāna
Maitreya–Vyāsa Saṃvāda

Vyāsa said: “From this state, because you have become a prince, you will in time attain Brahminhood. Even though you were once born in the womb of a worm, you gained the merit of seeing me; that very merit bore fruit in your becoming a royal son. And because today you have worshipped me, the result will be that after this Kṣatriya birth you will obtain the status of a Brāhmaṇa. O prince, after enjoying many kinds of worldly pleasures, you will finally offer up your life on the battlefield for the protection of cows and Brāhmaṇas. Thereafter, taking birth as a Brāhmaṇa, you will duly perform sacrifices endowed with proper gifts (dakṣiṇā) and enjoy the happiness of heaven. Then, becoming of the imperishable nature of Brahman, you will experience inexhaustible bliss.”
व्यास उवाच
Merit gained through reverent encounter with the wise (darśana) and sincere worship (pūjā) can elevate one’s future births; righteous Kṣatriya conduct culminates in self-sacrifice for protecting the vulnerable (cows and Brāhmaṇas), followed by ritual responsibility (yajña with dakṣiṇā) and ultimately spiritual consummation in imperishable Brahman and inexhaustible bliss.
Vyāsa addresses a prince and foretells his karmic trajectory: earlier low birth is redeemed by the merit of seeing Vyāsa; present worship ensures that after a Kṣatriya life—ending in battlefield self-offering for the protection of cows and Brāhmaṇas—he will be reborn as a Brāhmaṇa, perform properly endowed sacrifices, enjoy heaven, and finally attain the imperishable Brahman-state.
