Yudhiṣṭhira said: “Indeed, a person who is thus properly engaged (in the discipline of giving, especially the gift of food) lives happily, free from anxiety and distress; and he comes to possess beauty, good fame, and wealth as well.”
युधिछ्िर उवाच
The verse teaches that sincere engagement in dāna—especially anna-dāna—purifies the mind and reduces inner agitation, leading to a life of contentment and to socially visible fruits such as good reputation, attractiveness (as a sign of well-being), and material prosperity.
In the Anuśāsana Parva’s instruction on dharma, Yudhiṣṭhira speaks within a discussion on the merits of charitable giving, summarizing the beneficial results that accrue to one who is properly devoted to such giving.
