Śukra said: “The foremost manner of offering a lamp is to light it with ghee. The second is to light it with the expressed juices of medicinal plants—such as oils pressed from sesame, mustard, and the like. But one who seeks the well-being and nourishment of his own body should never light a lamp with oils extracted from fat, marrow, or the essence of bones.”
शुक्र उवाच
The verse ranks forms of lamp-offering by purity: ghee is best, plant oils are next, and using substances derived from bodily fat/marrow/bone is discouraged—especially for one seeking personal health—highlighting ritual propriety and ethical restraint in acts of charity.
In Anuśāsana Parva’s instruction on dharma and gifts, Śukra gives a prescriptive guideline about dīpa-dāna (lamp-giving), specifying which fuels are commendable and which should be avoided.
