Vaiśampāyana uvāca | Viśvācā-sahito reme vyabhrājan nandane vane | Alakāyāṃ sa kālaṃ tu meruśṛṅge tathottare ||

Vaiśampāyana said: Accompanied by the apsaras Viśvācā, King Yayāti delighted in pleasure and shone resplendent in Indra’s Nandana grove. For a time he also wandered at will in Alakā and upon the northern peaks of Mount Meru. Yet even amid celestial enjoyments, the awareness of time’s limit—of the thousand years that must inevitably be exhausted—cast a shadow of regret, reminding him that pleasure without restraint is bound to end and that one who knows Time cannot escape its law.

Educational Q&A

Even the highest pleasures are governed by Kāla (Time). Awareness of time’s limit turns enjoyment into reflection: indulgence is finite, and attachment to it inevitably leads to sorrow when its term ends.

Yayāti, accompanied by the apsaras Viśvācā, enjoys celestial pleasures in Nandana grove and also roams in Alakā and on Mount Meru’s northern heights. The passage frames his splendor while hinting at the approaching end of his allotted period of enjoyment.
