Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how personal desire and private conduct in royal life can generate far-reaching ethical and social consequences through progeny—raising issues of dharma related to marital fidelity, responsibility, and the legitimacy and duties tied to lineage.

Vaiśampāyana reports that Śarmiṣṭhā, described as beautiful and charmingly smiling, becomes pregnant for the first time by King Yayāti, indicating the beginning of a consequential line of descendants and intensifying the moral and familial tensions in the Yayāti episode.
