Chapter 74: Non-anger, Forbearance, and the Ethics of Residence

Duṣyanta said: “Just as good people, after respectfully greeting their elders, go away with a sense of deep contentment, so too a fool, after abusing a virtuous person, feels satisfied. The truly good live happily without hunting for others’ faults; but the foolish are forever looking only for faults in others. And the very defects for which wicked-minded people themselves become worthy of censure by the righteous—those same defects they falsely impute to the good and then revile them.”
True goodness finds peace through humility and respect (saluting elders), while folly seeks a counterfeit satisfaction by reviling the virtuous. The verse warns that fault-finding and slander reveal one’s own inner defects and invert moral perception.
Duṣyanta delivers a moral observation contrasting the conduct of the righteous with that of the foolish: the righteous gain contentment through proper reverence, whereas the foolish feel pleased after insulting good people, often projecting their own vices onto others.
