Ādi-parva Adhyāya 3 — Janamejaya’s Rite, Dhaumya’s Parīkṣā, and Uttanka’s Kuṇḍala Quest

athāparaḥ śiṣyas tasyaivāyodasya dhaumyasya vedo nāma tam upādhyāyaḥ samādideśa—vatsa veda ihāsyatāṁ tāvan mama gṛhe kañcit kālaṁ śuśrūṣuṇā ca bhavitavyam; śreyas te bhaviṣyatīti.

Then another disciple of that same teacher Āyoda-Dhaumya, named Veda, was instructed by his preceptor: “Dear Veda, stay here in my house for some time. You must remain attentive in service and obedience; this will bring you true welfare.”

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches that a student’s welfare (śreyas) is cultivated through disciplined residence with the teacher and attentive service (śuśrūṣā), emphasizing humility, obedience, and learning through lived practice.

After mentioning other disciples of the sage Āyoda-Dhaumya, the text introduces another student named Veda. The teacher instructs him to stay in his household for a period and to remain devoted to service, presenting this as beneficial for the student’s future good.
