O Lord, embodiment of the primal cause, grant me a mantra by which I may once more attain communion with You. I choose nothing apart from association with Your lotus-feet; therefore, in Your grace, grant me that alone.

Garuda (Vinata-putra), addressing Lord Vishnu

Concept: Mantra as upāya for repeated saṅga (communion) with the Lord; exclusive choice (ananya-vṛtti) of pādāmbuja-sambandha over all other goals.

Vedantic Theme: Grace-mediated sādhanā: the Lord as nidāna (causal ground) and the mantra as a bridge from jīva to īśvara; ekāntitā (single-pointed devotion).

Application: Adopt a disciplined japa practice received with reverence; simplify desires; measure choices by whether they deepen remembrance and service.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: adbhuta

Related Themes: Garuda Purana bhakti passages emphasizing nāma/mantra and exclusive refuge (general thematic parallel)

FAQs

In this verse, the mantra is sought as a direct means to renewed communion with Vishnu—showing mantra as a vehicle of bhakti and God-realization, not merely a ritual formula.

It frames the highest goal as saṅga (abiding connection) with the Lord’s lotus feet, indicating that liberation-oriented devotion surpasses all other attainments.

Prioritize sincere devotion and disciplined mantra-japa with the intention of inner transformation, keeping the ultimate aim as closeness to the Divine rather than worldly gains.
