Veṅkaṭācala Māhātmya: Bhakti-Lakṣaṇa, Nārasiṁha-tīrtha, and the Secret Darśana-Vidhi of Śrīnivāsa
निरृत्यप्यतिमध्ये तु शेषाय च नमोनमः / एवं कृत्वा नमस्कारं प्रणमेच्च पुनः पुनः
nirṛtyapyatimadhye tu śeṣāya ca namonamaḥ / evaṃ kṛtvā namaskāraṃ praṇamecca punaḥ punaḥ
Then, at the very center—having also reverently turned toward Nirṛti—one should offer repeated salutations to Śeṣa, saying “namo namaḥ.” Having thus performed the namaskāra, one should bow again and again.
Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: Repeated namaskāra as embodied devotion and surrender that steadies the mind and sanctifies approach.
Vedantic Theme: Īśvara-prapatti (surrender) expressed through karma-yoga-like ritual action; body as instrument of worship.
Application: Before worship/temple entry, pause at a ‘center’ (inner or outer), orient mind away from distraction, and offer repeated salutations with attention.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
Type: ritual-space/mandala-center
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 3.24 (darśana-vidhi context); Garuda Purana sections praising Śeṣa/Ananta as cosmic support (general)
This verse frames Śeṣa as a worthy recipient of repeated salutations; honoring Śeṣa is treated as part of correct ritual reverence and humility, reinforced by repeated pranāma.
Indirectly, it emphasizes disciplined ritual conduct—repeated obeisance and acknowledgment of cosmic powers—which the Garuda Purana often presents as supportive of dharma and auspicious transitions in life and death rites.
Cultivate humility and steadiness in worship: offer respectful salutations with attention and repetition, treating practice as deliberate (not casual), especially during daily prayers or rites connected to ancestors and dharma.
