Brahmā’s Curse, Four Births, and the Dharma of Shared Embodiment
Draupadī/Kṛṣṇā
ब्रह्मशापस्त्वनिर्वाय उपायैः शतशोपि च / नीचैः समागमो निन्द्यस्तथैव च विपत्तिदः
brahmaśāpastvanirvāya upāyaiḥ śataśopi ca / nīcaiḥ samāgamo nindyastathaiva ca vipattidaḥ
A curse incurred from Brahmins cannot be averted—even by hundreds of remedies; likewise, association with the base-minded is blameworthy and, in the same way, becomes a giver of calamity.
Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: Brahminical curse (brahma-śāpa) is extremely potent and difficult to neutralize; association with the low-minded is itself a cause of downfall.
Vedantic Theme: Karma’s inevitability and the power of saṅga (association) in shaping vāsanā and destiny.
Application: Avoid actions that incur the wrath/curse of the righteous; choose uplifting communities and mentors; practice restraint in speech and conduct.
Primary Rasa: bhayanaka
Secondary Rasa: raudra
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 3.17.16 (praise of good association)
This verse stresses its grave moral-spiritual weight, stating it is not easily neutralized even by many remedial measures, urging strict adherence to dharma and respect toward Brahmins.
By warning that certain actions—incurring brahmaśāpa and keeping degrading company—rapidly generate adverse karma (vipatti), which in Garuda Purana’s framework can manifest as suffering, obstacles, and negative post-death outcomes.
Avoid harmful influences and unethical circles, cultivate sattvic company, and act with restraint and respect—especially toward spiritual elders and dharmic institutions—to reduce self-created misfortune.
